①Editors of newspapers and magazines often go to extremes to provide their reader with unimportant facts and statistics. Last year a journalist had been instructed by a well-known magazine to write an article on the president's palace in a new African republic. ②When the article arrived, the editor read the first sentence and then refuse to publish it. The article began: 'Hundreds of steps lead to the high wall which surrounds the president's palace'. The editor at once sent the journalist a fax instructing him find out the exact number of steps and the height of the wall.

When the article arrived, the editor read the first sentence and then refuse to publish it. The article began: 'Hundreds of steps lead to the high wall which surrounds the president's palace'. The editor at once sent the journalist a fax instructing him find out the exact number of steps and the height of the wall.

稿子寄来后，编辑看第一句话就拒绝予以发表。文章的开头是这样的：“几百级台阶通向环绕总统的高墙。”编辑立即给那位记者发去传真，要求他核实一下台阶的确切数字和围墙的高度。

（1）and连词的用法

the editor read the first sentence and then refuse to publish it.

在这个句子中可以看出有两个动词，read和refuse，一个句子里为什么会出现两个谓语，这就是and连词的作用。下面听我一一道来。

①and连接两个并列关系

It is impossible to live in society and be independent of society. 生于社会，不能脱离社会。（and连接两个不定式）

②and连接两个动词，但不是并列关系，但有所关联

Try and do it again. 再试试看。

③and可以做叠词

longer and longer 越来越长

over and over 反复

④and可以表示加法，或在口语中表达100以上的数字时使用

One and two are three. 一加二等于三。

one hundred and twelve. 112。

and的用法与or有很多相似之处，后面我们用到再讲，记得关注我哈。

（2）at once表示立即，马上

一般副词都可以放在句中或句尾，而副词短语则一般放在句尾。

I must see the doctor at once! 我现在就要见医生！

She ran briskly out of the classroom. 她轻快的跑出了教室。
