两种复数形式media和mediums，你能分清楚吗？

Medium一词在16世纪晚期进入英语并发展成可数名词的含义。那么，什么是“Medium”的复数形式呢？目前公认的两种复数形式是media和mediums。

Media n。媒体；媒质（medium的复数）

例如：

It’s difficult to adapt plays to the cinematic format – the two media are very different。

让剧集匹配电影形式是很难的——这两种媒体差异很大。

Painting and other static visual media have limited narrative possibilities。

绘画和其他静态视觉媒体发展潜力很受限制。

The media do play a role in fuelling panics。

媒体在引发恐慌中扮演了一定的角色。

Most of us are known to succumb to persuasion through the media。

我们之中的大多数人都抵挡不住传播媒介的宣传。

English is used as the medium of instruction for all primary education。

所有基础教育都用英语授课。

Media在1920年代发展成一个集体名词，表示“电视、广播以及出版社的整体”。其他集体名词还有family（家庭）或government（政府），可以视为单数或复数。同样，标准英语中media这个词同样可以视为单数或复数：

✓ The media is to blame for this controversy。

✓ The media are to blame for this controversy。

单复数形式的选择，取决于你想要表达的重点。如果你是指大众传媒、一个行业或领域的活动，使用单数形式更为自然。

例如：

The media is to blame for this controversy。

这起争议应由媒体负责。

而如果你在谈论记者人员，通常更适合使用复数动词：

The media were camped out on her doorstep all night。

这起争议应由相关媒体（人员）负责。

（1）句子的主干为 these firms have long claimed to be mere “platforms”（主谓宾）。宾语是不定式to be mere platforms.

（2）现在分词短语作状语passively hosting content / they say / they are neither able nor willing to assess. 其中，they are neither able nor willing to assess作定语从句修饰content. 而they say作为插入语。

【译文】

——传媒公司何时不是传媒公司？

——当在互联网上的时候。
