5G "piercing the sky" technology is becoming a hot topic as it directly connects to satellite networks, allowing communication in extreme environments such as deserts, oceans, and areas without ground network coverage. This technology is of great significance for the development of the 5G industry, as it enriches network coverage and helps solve communication problems in remote areas, oceans, and the sky. China has been actively deploying 5G NTN technology and collaborating with telecom operators to promote its maturity and commercialization. At the conference, China Telecom and ZTE jointly released the "China Telecom 5G NTN Technology Whitepaper" and launc

hed the "Satellite as a Service" program. The whitepaper proposes important views on the fusion architecture of 5G NTN non-ground network, 4/5G mobile network, and IoT, as well as the evolution of 3GPP standard protocols and direct connectivity of mobile phones. It provides valuable strategic references for the development of 5G NTN technology, network, and terminal industries and future network and business evolution.

ZTE has been a leader in promoting the development of aerial internet even before entering the 5G NTN field. It has pioneered the ground network and air-to-ground (ATG) co-frequency technology in the industry and built a low-altitude broadband coverage network with 5G ATG, which has been widely used in aviation. In 2020, ZTE and China Telecom opened three ATG test flight routes from Beijing to Chengdu, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. In 2021, ZTE achieved the world's first commercial 5G ATG network. Currently, ZTE is in the process of obtaining airworthiness certification for 5G ATG commercial use on domestic aircraft.

In terms of promoting the commercialization of 5G NTN, ZTE has already completed several significant tests in collaboration with its telecom partners. In January of this year, ZTE and China Telecom completed the world's first field verification of S-band 5G NTN technology. In May, they completed the first domestic field verification of direct satellite con

nection for 5G NTN smartphones. In September, they conducted the first 5G NTN test in marine scenes in Zhoushan, Zhejiang.

The marine scene 5G NTN test in Zhoushan has attracted much attention as it marks an important milestone in the commercialization of 5G NTN technology. The test included applications such as monitoring marine water quality, ship supervision, environmental data monitoring, and emergency communication. The test used China's self-developed Tiantong mobile communication satellite, domestically produced 5G base stations and terminals with NTN functionality, and complied with the international standard of 3GPP R17 NTN. The test results were satisfactory.

With accumulated industry practices in the 5G NTN field, ZTE aims to address technical challenges such as satellite orbit and frequency resource scarcity, differences in space-side performance, network information security, and application exploration. They strive to expand the application of this technology to wider scenarios such as snowy mountains and deserts, and contribute to the digital transformation of various industries.
